Spring 2018 Happenings

After this cold winter, we are ready to be outside! We hope you will join us for a few outdoor educational activities, as well as opportunities to get your hands dirty with invasive species removal and riparian tree plantings. At IRWP, we love Spring time in Northwest Arkansas and want you to enjoy it with us! 
A few special items: 
Friends Survey: In an effort to improve our communication and interactions with folks who are vitaly important to IRWP's programming, operations, and maintenance (i.e. you!!), would you please take 5 minutes to complete our online survey? Your assistance is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance for participating!
2017 Annual Report: Are you curious how IRWP staff spent their time (and your financial support) in 2017? Or how IRWP fulfills its mission of improving the integrity of the Illinois River through education, monitoring, conservation, and restoration? Please take a look at our annual report. We are very proud of our accomplishments in 2017 and hope you to are proud of us! 
Free Trees for Riparian Landowners: Are you interested in helping improve water quality, wildlife habitat, and streambank stabilization? Free of charge, IRWP will provide native trees to landowners with riparian areas on their property. If you live in one of our priority subwatersheds (Moore's Creek, Muddy Fork, Clear Creek, Sager Creek, or the Illinois River around Savoy) we'll even plant them for free with one year of monitoring! Summer Internship Opportunities: We are currently recruiting interns for our summer camp programming. Interns will be responsible for leading a variety of nature-based environmental education activities to students aged 8 to middle school through June and July. Invasive Removal

Date: Tuesday, February 20th
Time:

We will be removing multiple types of invasive species from the IRWP property. The removal area is forested, so dress appropriately in long pants, long sleeves, and good closed toe shoes or boots. There is also poison ivy in the area, which makes clothing coverage very important. Volunteers are encouraged to bring loppers, hand pruners, kneeling pads and chainsaws if they have them. Work gloves, limited tools and lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to Stephanie by emailing stephanie@irwp.org or calling 479-215-6623. 

IRWP and ANHC Invasive Removal

We'll be at it again, this time working on Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission's Cave Springs Natural Area, which adjoins IRWP's Watershed Sanctuary. As always with field work, dress appropriately in long pants, long sleeves, and good closed toe shoes or boots.  Volunteers are encouraged to bring loppers, hand pruners, kneeling pads and chainsaws if they have them. 11th Annual Riparian Project

Date: Saturday, March 10th

IRWP will be planting along riparian (streambank) areas at multiple sites in the northwest Arkansas area. Volunteers should dress appropriately and wear good sturdy shoes. Green Infrastructure Academy

Date: Thursday, April 5th

Guest speaker, Katie Teague, with the Washington County Cooperative Extension Service. 

This Academy will explain what green infrastructure means, and will go over different types of projects that fall under green infrastructure, such as pervious paving, green roofs, vegetated walls, and rain water harvesting, with a special emphasis on rain garden/bioswale design. To wrap up, we will tour the grounds and see completed examples of green infrastructure projects that were discussed earlier. Free and open to the public. Registration required. IRWP Commercial LID Field Tour

The day will begin with presentations on different types of green infrastructure that local businesses and developers can implement to reduce stormwater runoff and improve water quality. It will be followed by a field tour of multiple commercial sites in Fayetteville to see green infrastructure practices that local businesses have installed. Lunch will be provided.
