Chainsaw Safety Basics
Tuesday, July 14 | 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. | IRWP Sanctuary

Join the Illinois River Watershed Partnership for a full-day introductory training led by Brian Branum of STIHL Southwest Inc. The morning classroom session covers PPE, hazard identification, chainsaw safety features, and cutting techniques; in the afternoon, we'll head outdoors for hands-on equipment demonstrations.

Open to landowners, volunteers, trail stewards, conservation professionals, municipal staff — anyone who wants to work smarter and safer with a saw!

Registration is limited to 30 participants.

Lunch will be provided from Great Harvest!

Wear closed-toe boots and long pants, dress for the weather, and bring a water bottle. Part of the Conservation Training Program.

Training Overview

Whether you’re maintaining trails, managing natural areas, clearing storm debris, or working on your own property, this introductory training will provide essential chainsaw safety knowledge and hands-on equipment demonstrations.

Morning Session (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)

Chainsaw Safety Fundamentals

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Hazard recognition and risk assessment

  • Safe operating procedures

  • Chainsaw components and maintenance basics

  • Cutting techniques and best practices

Lunch Break

Participants will break for lunch before reconvening for the afternoon session.

Afternoon Session (1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.)

Equipment Demonstrations

  • Chainsaw inspection and setup

  • Demonstration of safe cutting practices

  • Equipment features and maintenance tips

  • Questions and discussion

The two-tiered Conservation Training Program is being developed under the EPA CPRG Workforce Development Grant administered by MetroPlan and NWA Regional Planning Commission

Project Partners implementing the Workforce Development Grant are Watershed Conservation Resource Center (WCRC) (lead), Illinois River Watershed Partnership (IRWP), Arkansas Advanced Energy Foundation (AAEF), and Beaver Watershed Alliance (BWA).
