Volunteer Day at a Retrofitted Detention Pond in Springdale

  • Apple Orchard Detention Pond 1637 Apple Butter Street Springdale, AR, 72764 United States (map)

Visit a detention pond that was retrofitted in Fall of 2024 and is now a thriving wetland improving stormwater management and water quality for the City of Springdale.

How was this detention pond retrofitted?

  • Removing a concrete channel that prevented stormwater infiltration into the ground.

  • Reconstructing the stormwater outfall to retain more stormwater.

  • Replacing shallow-rooted grasses with deep-rooted native plants accustomed to wetland conditions to improve soil permeability.

The tasks of this volunteer event will be removing litter and invasive plants. Wear rain or muck boots if you have them - it might be wet!

Please come with questions, we are happy to share details on the physical components, the partnerships, and the public engagement that has made this project a success!

Why Volunteer?

  • Learn about green infrastructure and its role in sustainable stormwater management.

  • Help restore and protect the local watershed, benefiting the entire community.

  • Enjoy a hands-on opportunity to learn about native plant species that support biodiversity.

  • Meet other passionate individuals who care about environmental conservation.
